Don’t use the Gamètì winter road on Friday, governments warned as a winter storm approaches Tłı̨chǫ communities and Yellowknife.

Weather forecasters warn the storm will bring gusts of up to 70 km/h and snow by Friday afternoon and evening.

The winter road between Gamètì and Whatì only just opened. Some residents had been expected to use it to reach Behchokǫ̀ for a hand games tournament this weekend.

“Due to a winter storm watch of the North Slave Region, a DO NOT travel advisory is being implemented” for the road, the Tłı̨chǫ Government warned on Thursday evening, echoing an NWT government announcement.

The winter storm advisory covers Yellowknife, the Tłı̨chǫ communities, Fort Resolution, Łútsël K’é, Fort Providence and Kakisa.

In addition, Environment and Climate Change Canada now warns of blowing snow affecting the Sahtu and Wrigley on Friday as winds gust to 60 km/h in those regions.

“The visibility will be as low as 800m in exposed areas. Conditions will improve by this evening when the winds begin to taper off,” forecasters stated early on Friday morning.

“Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”
