The City of Yellowknife says John Collin will succeed the outgoing Sheila Bassi-Kellett as its next city manager.

Bassi-Kellett announced in the fall she would step down by the end of March.

In a news release, the city said Collin will take over from April 9. He is a former city manager of Saint John, New Brunswick and a 35-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, achieving the rank of major-general.

During his four years at Saint John, the City of Yellowknife stated, the New Brunswick city “addressed severe financial concerns, saw renewed growth and vibrancy, and developed many initiatives and plans to address concerns within modern cities.”

Saint John piloted a four-day work week for municipal staff and dealt with a major ransomware incident during Collin’s time in charge.

The City of Yellowknife said it extended a “heartfelt thank-you” to Bassi-Kellett for her seven years of leadership.

“I’m very pleased to welcome John to this critical role as Yellowknife moves forward with a number of important issues and priorities,” Mayor Rebecca Alty was quoted as saying.

“John’s experience will be a huge asset to the city and the community, and city council is looking forward to working with him, and city administration, to move ahead productively.

“I’d like to extend a big thank-you to Sheila for all of her work, particularly over the past few tumultuous years, and the city appreciates her availability for corporate knowledge transition over the next couple of months.”
