Yellowknifer Caitlin Cleveland announced on Thursday morning she intends to stand for election in Kam Lake in October’s territorial election.

Cleveland joins incumbent Kieron Testart and former MLA Robert Hawkins in the race for the spot.

“As a photographer I have spent the last 15 years connecting with northerners about what matters to us: our people, our land, and our future,” she wrote on Facebook.

Cleveland, who lives in the riding, is a senior policy analyst and was previously a communications officer for the territorial government.

She believes this, coupled with her experience as an entrepreneur, gives her “a unique perspective to both challenges of operating a northern business and the inner working of our government.”

As a lifelong northerner and parent, she wrote, her focus is on quality of life and sustainability of land in the NWT.

“Our need for social change continues to grow as our current economy requires innovation and expansion,” she said.

“I live here. I work here. And I want to work hard for the people of Kam Lake and the North as we, together, write the next chapter for the NWT.”
