Yellowknife’s ninth annual Brain Tumour Walk will take place at Somba K’e Civic Plaza next month.
Renee Wiseman said it’s her first time organizing the event, though she has been involved with the initiative for roughly a decade. Her cousin Matthew Tremblett, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour, passed away in 2020.
Funds raised go to toward the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.
This year’s walk will include a face-painting station for children, a zumba warm-up, photos for survivors, a charity barbecue and live music by Brenden MacIntosh. Organizers have also arranged a Bottles for Brains drive, where participants can drop off bottles for recycling.
A silent auction will take place on the day, for which organizers are accepting donations. Wiseman said a Facebook page has been set up for residents who want more information about the walk.
Loretta Ransom is organizing the event alongside Wiseman. According to Ransom, last year’s event saw a turnout of roughly 70 people. Around 15 volunteers help make the annual walks a success.
“For those who have been impacted by brain tumour, it allows everyone to come together and acknowledge that there’s support out there and that we’re coming together for a good cause,” Ransom said.
“It involves fundraising and just a chance for people to really unite. You could see the smiles on people’s faces, along with tears, of course, but that’s probably the best part about it.”
The event starts at 10am on Saturday, June 8. Interested participants can register as individuals or teams on the Brain Tumour Walk website.
