NWT Fire says “really great work” by firefighters means a wildfire that triggered an evacuation notice in Edzo this week is now being held.
“Being held” means the wildfire is not thought likely to spread beyond existing boundaries as firefighting efforts continue, based on the weather forecast ahead.
Fire ZF011 started near the western shore of Marian Lake last week. It has been held about 17 km from Edzo.
“Some really great work done on this fire over the last few days means an update in status to being held,” said NWT wildfire information officer Mike Westwick.
“Still a lot of work ahead – it’s not yet under control and work will continue to manage this fire.”
Rain was expected to help firefighters’ efforts on Thursday, while the prevailing wind was blowing the fire toward the lake rather than the community.
“A structure protection specialist is proactively planning for the potential for future growth to the south towards Edzo. This is proactive – if you see fire personnel in your community, it does not necessarily mean the risk has gotten higher,” NWT Fire stated.
Edzo’s evacuation notice, meaning residents should prepare in case the situation worsens, remained in place as of 4:30pm on Thursday.
