The NWT government has announced the winners of its second year of Alfred Moses and Tom Williams memorial scholarships.

The $1,000 scholarships were introduced in 2022 to honour both men. Moses was the NWT’s housing minister prior to his passing, while Williams led the NWT’s housing corporation.

The money is designed to support students enrolled in training programs that focus on housing.

This year’s recipients are Mary-Leigh Firth, James Blake, Haiden Duncan, Shakira Ellton, Tyeron J Lennie, Natalie Jade Villeneuve, Jada Beck, Rogan Young Pine, Nelson J Mantla, Sierra Apples, James M Rose and Stella Wong.

Two were selected from each of the Beaufort Delta, Nahendeh, North Slave, Sahtu and South Slave Housing NWT districts, as well as two in Yellowknife.

“The territory and its growing housing needs are in good hands with these future carpenters, welders, engineers, business administrators, electricians and healthcare professionals,” housing minister Lucy Kuptana was quoted as saying in a Thursday news release.

“In order to improve housing and better support communities across the territory, we need to invest in NWT youth. This will not only give them a leg up in their education and careers, but also will help strengthen the territory’s workforce and create more housing solutions.”
