The NWT government has banned open flames outdoors across almost the entire South Slave, Dehcho and North Slave regions.
Announced for the Dehcho and North Slave on Friday evening and expanded to the South Slave on Saturday, the ban covers all non-federal land – very little is federal – in the two regions.
Land within communities is included in the ban, as are all territorial parks and protected areas in those regions.

The ban will last until at least the end of August 2 in the Dehcho and North Slave and may be extended. It’ll last until at least the end of July 26 in the South Slave.
“These bans are being implemented due to high-to-extreme wildfire danger and extraordinary weather and drought conditions. They are intended to help protect communities, values at risk, and wildland firefighters by limiting avoidable person-caused fires which could become a threat to people and property,” the territory stated in a news release on Friday.
You can still use closed stoves, barbecues and approved gas or propane fire pits. “The use of fire for exercising Aboriginal or treaty rights by Indigenous peoples are exempt from these restrictions,” the GNWT stated.
The full details of the ban, which also covers fireworks, the use of tracer ammunition and sky lanterns, are available on the GNWT’s website.
