A young black bear was reportedly seen in the area of Yellowknife’s Tin Can Hill on Tuesday, the territorial government has confirmed.

The Department of Environment and Climate Change said officers had patrolled the area, spoken with residents using the trails, put out signs and set a live bear trap.

Those patrols are continuing.

In an emailed statement, an ECC spokesperson added: “Tin Can Hill is a designated off-leash dog area and several residents were observed walking dogs unleashed.

“With bears reported in the area, ECC recommends that people using the area ensure their pets are leashed and kept close for safety reasons. Also, walk in groups and make noise when in the area.”

This is at least the second reported bear sighting in Yellowknife over the past week, after a bear seen around the city’s golf club was relocated on Thursday.
