Drinking water in Nahanni Butte now contains safe levels of manganese, the NWT’s chief environmental health officer said on Friday afternoon.

Nahanni Butte’s tap water had been under an advisory since July warning that young children and pregnant women shouldn’t drink it due to high levels of manganese, which workers in the small Dehcho community said had come from resin flaking off pipes.

Staff said the issue had been “caught early,” while other residents said most people in Nahanni Butte ordinarily relied on other water sources anyway, like bottled water or water from nearby mountain streams.

On Friday, the GNWT sounded the all clear.

“Manganese levels in the community’s drinking water are now safe. Residents can resume normal use of the water,” an advisory read.

“The Department of Health and Social Services recommends that residents and businesses flush and clean their water tanks. The community government of Nahanni Butte will assist residents with cleaning their tanks.”
