Police in Yellowknife are investigating a car fire in the vicinity of Bigelow Crescent over the weekend.

Dougie Heron, a resident of the neighbourhood, said the car belonged to him. He described running out of his house after hearing noises.

“A few people said a couple of guys [poured] something onto my vehicle and lit it on fire,” Heron told Cabin Radio.

“I heard people yelling … I ran outside and it was my vehicle.”

RCMP said no injuries were reported as a result of the fire, which was extinguished by the city’s firefighters early on Sunday morning. (A house fire took place several hours later at the nearby Borealis housing co-op. So far, there’s no suggestion the two were linked.)

“The fire is suspicious in nature,” RCMP said of the car fire in an email on Tuesday. “This matter is currently under investigation and no charges have been laid at this time.”

Heron said he had been saving up for a house and never missed a day of his job, though he needed the car to get there daily. In a Facebook post following the incident, he said he was planning to start a GoFundMe page.

Within 12 hours, Heron said local businesses had reached out to offer support.

“A guy from Aurora Dodge first reached out to me on Saturday morning. His name is Joe. He told me his manager wanted to help me out with a used vehicle. I was beyond grateful,” he said.
