The Town of Hay River will hold a vigil for the late Cst Christopher Worden at its community centre from 7pm on Sunday, October 6.
Worden, stationed in Hay River since 2005, was shot and killed in the line of duty on October 6 two years later.
In 2009, Emrah Bulatci was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with no parole for at least 25 years.
According to the CBC, Bulatci applied to be released on probation this year under a “faint hope clause” that existed in the year he was charged with the crime.
Residents of Hay River and RCMP staff pay tribute to Worden on October 6 each year.
This Sunday will mark 17 years since he lost his life.
Earlier this year, Jodie Baulkham – who was Worden’s wife – returned to the community after writing a book about what happened to her family in 2007 and her journey since. The couple’s daughter, Alexis, was eight months old when her father was killed.
“It really warms mine and Alexis’s heart to know that we’re still thought of and that Chris is still remembered every year,” Baulkham said in March.
