The band manager of Nahanni Butte says there is currently no threat to residents or properties despite rising water levels in the community.

The update comes after the GNWT warned that rainfall of 25 to 40 mm forecast for the South Nahanni River basin this week could increase flood risk. The territorial government advised community members to be prepared for possible rapid rises in water levels.

Band manager Soham Srimani said the community’s Local Emergency Management Organization met on Monday afternoon and again early Tuesday to review the current situation.

According to him, residents are being informed about the developing conditions through phone calls, posters, social media and face to face.

Nahɂą Dehé Dene Band Chief Steve Vital, who was in Yellowknife for a meeting, is understood to have returned to Nahanni Butte late Monday after being notified of the conditions.

“We remain in regular contact with Maca and ECC, GNWT, the RCMP and MLA Thompson, and we continue to share updates as new information becomes available,” Srimani told Cabin Radio, adding that water levels in both the South Nahanni and Liard rivers have been rising over the past several days, which is typical for June.

“At present, there is no threat to community residents or properties. We are closely monitoring the South Nahanni riverbank in and around the community, with inspections being conducted every 30 minutes.”

Srimani said the community will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as necessary.
