In separate notices, the NWT government said South Slave roads, phone calls and internet access all face disruption in the days ahead.

The highway disruption is a result of ongoing work to move modular homes.

The homes will continue along Highway 5 and across the Big Buffalo River Bridge until Monday, with road closures and delays from 8am till 6pm daily.

Then, next week, one modular home will head down Highway 5 to Fort Smith on Monday and Tuesday, while four others will be taken on Highway 6 to Fort Resolution from Tuesday to Saturday.

The GNWT said drivers should check Drive NWT, its new highway conditions website, before travelling.

Meanwhile, Northwestel is planning maintenance work that the GNWT said will “temporarily impact all voice, internet, and cellular services” in Kakisa, Enterprise, Fort Resolution, Fort Smith and Hay River.

That work is scheduled to take place overnight, between 12am and 6am, each night from Tuesday to Friday next week, October 22-25.

Technicians are taking out the temporary fibre lines used to fix damage during last year’s wildfires and installing permanent replacements.

“While this work is essential for long-term service reliability, it will temporarily disrupt network access – including 9-1-1 service – for up to two hours each night,” the GNWT stated.

“If your phone remains operational, you should still be able to reach 9-1-1. If it is not, you can contact the local RCMP detachment directly or go to the nearest RCMP station.

“For health emergencies, if you are unable to reach local health clinics or hospitals by phone, please proceed directly to the nearest health facility. For non-emergencies, you can call 8-1-1 to speak with a registered nurse.”
