New figures published by the City of Yellowknife show more lakes within city limits have reached the six-inch thickness generally considered the safe minimum to walk on.

Measurements began last week, at which point some lakes had already hit six inches but others were a little way off.

The Great Slave Snowmobile Association’s latest measurements, publicized by the city on Monday, show Niven Lake and Range Lake have now met the minimum in all areas measured.

Grace Lake and areas of Kam Lake still aren’t quite there. Yellowknife Bay at the boat launch posted only 4.5-inch thickness, but the ice road entrance off School Draw Avenue has now hit six inches.

The city routinely reminds residents that they still need to take care on frozen ice as conditions can change from area to area, regardless of posted measurements.
