Rail terminal operator Cando says it has acquired the terminal in Enterprise that was founded and operated by former Hay River mayor Brad Mapes’ AWP Industries.
The Enterprise terminal has become a significant cargo hub for the NWT after CN declined last year to repair a section of track leading north from Enterprise to Hay River, which was previously a major rail destination for the territory’s freight.
In a Wednesday news release, Cando said Mapes had become a Cando employee and shareholder.
The company operates 13 terminals and just under 50 industrial railyards throughout North America.
Brian Cornick, Cando’s president, said Mapes had “done a tremendous job over the last few years turning undeveloped land into a fast-growing rail terminal serving several of North America’s largest shippers.”
The value of the acquisition was not made public.
Cando said the Enterprise yard is “strategically located at the northern terminus of CN’s rail network and serves as a critical gateway to transport bulk products to support communities, airports, mines, and governmental agencies in the North.”
“The terminal acquired from AWP was recently built and has substantial capacity for future growth, providing a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative to long-haul trucking,” the company added.
In the news release, Mapes said he was “excited to partner with Cando and leverage its scale, access to capital, world-class operations, and deep customer relationships to accelerate and expand my vision for the terminal.”
