A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for possessing cocaine for the purposes of trafficking in Yellowknife.
RCMP announced in August 2021 that Joseph Nour had been arrested and charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling, possessing cocaine for the purposes of trafficking and possessing property obtained by crime under $5,000.
According to an agreed statement of facts filed with the court, staff with rental housing company Northview had notified RCMP on August 18, 2021, that people were occupying a unit in Yellowknife’s Fort Gary apartment complex without Northview’s consent.
When police went to the unit, they found Nour and another man inside.
At the time of his arrest, Nour had a clear bag containing white powder on him, later confirmed to be 26.3 grams of crack cocaine, as well as a bag around his neck containing $2,590. Officers also found in the apartment a digital scale with white powder residue, cut-up portions of plastic sandwich bags and three cell phones.
Nour admitted to possessing the items, that he possessed the crack cocaine for the purposes of trafficking, and that the cash was the proceeds of trafficking.
Nour pleaded guilty to one count of possessing cocaine for the purposes of trafficking in Territorial Court. The two other charges were withdrawn.
A charge of being unlawfully in an apartment laid against the other man arrested was stayed in December 2021.
In Territorial Court last week, Judge Gary Magee sentenced Nour to 18 months’ imprisonment less 258 days’ credit for time served in pre-trial custody. Once he is released, Nour will be prohibited from possessing firearms for 10 years.
