Two Yellowknife daycares are launching a fundraising effort that involves adult artists finishing paintings started by children.
Parents at the Raven’s Nest and Centre for Northern Families daycares are leading the initiative to help cover costs of renovations and equipment.
Using a “reverse colouring book” or “finish the drawing” approach, children at the daycares will start each piece by scribbling or painting on a canvas.
The way the contest is envisaged, local artists will take those initial marks and transform them using their own styles and techniques. People get to bid on the finished artwork at an event near the end of May.
“Our aim with this event is to not only raise funds for the daycares for different equipment and upgrades that may be needed, but also to have a ‘feel-good’ community event bringing people together,” said Amy Stuart, a member of a parents’ committee for the daycares.
“I find the art community here in Yellowknife really great. Everyone’s always willing to help, and we have a lot of really amazing artists in Yellowknife who have very different styles as well.”
Stuart imagines art started by kids aged two, three or four ending up on walls across the city and beyond as landscapes, abstract paintings or something else entirely.
So far, she said, five artists are interested in taking part and others are welcome to sign up. They can choose to receive a portion of the sale price of the work or donate that amount to the fundraiser. If you’re an artist who’d like to be involved, you can contact Stuart for details.
The venue and date for the final auction are to be confirmed, Stuart said.
