Groups that oversee the NWT’s Peary caribou herd say they have reached an agreement on implementing a recovery strategy for the animals.

The Conference of Management Authorities – a collection of wildlife boards and governments – said this means actions to support the herd’s recovery have now been identified and agreed on.

Peary caribou are listed as a threatened species. The herd is found on Arctic islands in the NWT and Nunavut.

The NWT government says the Peary herd dropped sharply in number between the 1960s and 1990s but there is “recent evidence of an increase in numbers on the Queen Elizabeth Islands and Banks Island.”

A recovery strategy has existed since 2024 and the new agreement should set in motion actions to support that strategy.

“Successful conservation of Peary caribou in the NWT will depend on the commitment and cooperation of the many different groups with responsibility for wildlife management in the NWT, together with residents and visitors,” the Conference of Management Authorities stated.

A progress report will be due in five years’ time.
