The MV Lafferty ferry outside Fort Simpson has opened for the season, according to a Thursday Facebook post from the NWT’s Department of Infrastructure.
The ferry connects Fort Simpson and Wrigley to the rest of Canada.
The GNWT lists the average opening date for the ferry as May 14. This year’s opening date is slightly later than in the past few years.
Last year, the opening date of May 8 was the earliest the ferry had opened since 1994.
Earlier this month, Fort Simpson residents were concerned about the viability of the ferry service after a suspected broken gauge briefly gave an incorrect water level reading below the threshold for the ferry to sail.
