The Northwest Territories’ wildfire agency reported one new wildfire burning 15 km south of the Ingraham Trail and 28 km east of Dettah on Monday.
In an evening update, NWT Fire said aircraft and crews had rapidly attacked the wildfire to limit its growth and would continue to take action to bring the fire under control.
The lightning-caused wildfire, labelled ZF005, was last assessed as being 11 hectares in size. NWT Fire said it is not currently a threat to structures, infrastructure or communities.
Meanwhile, three wildfires continue to burn in the Dehcho region and three in the South Slave.
Fire SS009, a wildfire that originated in Alberta, has burned 6,545 hectares and destroyed two cabins east of Fort Smith. NWT Fire said Alberta and territorial fire crews are working together to manage the fire, which “continues to show increased activity.”
An out-of-control wildfire burning 30 km southwest of Sambaa K’e, labelled FS002, has grown to 2,800 hectares. Crews are setting up sprinklers on cabins while NWT Fire said there is no threat to Sambaa K’e at this time.
A wildfire burning 24 km northwest of Fort Smith along the Slave River remains at 325 hectares, while a fire burning 13 km west of Highway 1 in the Cameron Hills is estimated to have grown to 11,358 hectares but is not threatening anything.
A wildfire burning 74 km east of Fort Liard is estimated to be 200 hectares and a fire burning 14 km north of the BC border is 250 hectares. Neither wildfire is threatening communities, cabins or infrastructure.
Wildfire FS005, which had been burning 27 km southwest of Fort Simpson on the west side of the Martin River, has been declared out.
