The Northwest Territories chief environmental health officer is advising all residents in Tsiigehtchic to boil their drinking water for at least one minute.

The Department of Health and Social Services issued the precautionary boil water advisory on Thursday afternoon due to higher than normal turbidity in the water. It said there have not been any illnesses associated with drinking water reported in the community.

The advisory states that all water used for drinking, preparing food, making ice cubes and brushing teeth should be boiled. The NWT government said this is particularly important when preparing formula for infants.

The advisory states alternatives to boiling water include using bottled water or processing water through distillation, reverse osmosis or filtration using a filter with a size of one micron absolute or less. It said Brita type filters that use activated carbon filters are not a safe method for treating water during a boil water advisory.

The chief environmental health officer and community government said they will continue to monitor the situation.
