Earth Week returns to Yellowknife in 2026 from Monday, April 20 to Sunday, April 26, promising events about “connecting, learning and celebrating the land.”
While all events are free, organizers Ecology North said donations are welcome and volunteers are being sought.
Here’s a quick guide to the schedule.
Week-long
YK Car Share Co-op promotion. The $30 member sign-up fee is waived for anyone who joins during Earth Week. Email [email protected].
Story Walk: Under and Over the Snow. Walk the Niven Lake Trail and read this book along the way. Email a photo of yourself on the story walk, or reading on the land outside Yellowknife, to [email protected] for a chance to win a book.
Monday, April 20
Opening ceremony. 12-1pm at the Yellowknife Visitor Centre. William Greenland and Bobby Drygeese lead a celebration of land and water stewardship, acknowledging Indigenous relationships with the land.
Paint Your Produce watercolour workshop. 5:30-7:30pm at the Yellowknife Visitor Centre. A workshop for ages 10 and up inspired by vegetables and the natural world.
Movie night with Arctic Energy Alliance. 6:30-8:30pm at the Arctic Energy Alliance office. A screening of 2022 animated film Strange World. Space is limited, so register online.
Tuesday, April 21
Medicine walk with Lila Fraser Erasmus. 12-1pm at the Niven Lake trailhead off the Chateau Nova parking lot. Learn about traditional medicines.
EV lunch and learn with YK Car Share Co-op. 12-1pm at the Somba K’e charging station in the City Hall parking lot. Bring a lunch and learn how to use an electric vehicle carshare.
Giant Mine: Past, Present and Future with Alternatives North. 7-9pm at the Northern United Place auditorium. Speakers include Jeff Rosnawski of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation; Cynthia Creed, who lived at the townsite; former miner Steve Peterson; Branda Le on site archives; and Mike Palmer on arsenic and wildfires.
Wednesday, April 22
The Wonderful World of Worms. 11am-12pm at the Yellowknife Public Library. Ecology North hosts “wormy activities and discussions” in the kids’ area. All welcome.
Guided story walk with the NWT Literacy Council. 4-5pm at the Niven Lake trailhead off Niven Drive. An interactive outdoor reading of Over and Under the Snow.
Community litter pickup. 5:30-6:30pm, meet at the City Hall stairs. Bags, gloves and safety vests provided.
Thursday, April 23
Découverte du sirop bouleau, avec AFCY et FFT. 12-1pm at the Maison Bleue, 5016 48 St. An introduction to birch sap tapping with Mike Mitchell, including a tasting. Bring a lunch.
Butter Me Up with YK Food Rescue. 3:30-5pm at École Įtł’ǫ̀. Learn how to make your own butter and reduce food waste.
Track your bills with Arctic Energy Alliance. 5:30-6:30pm at 5102 51 St. Learn to read and track your energy bills (event requires registration).
Bike tune-up. 6-7:30pm at Makerspace YK. Volunteer experts help get your bike ready for summer.
Friday, April 24
Paint and Plot a Pollinator Pot with TAA. 12-1pm at Tastes of the North. Decorate your own pollinator pot ahead of planting season.
Fireside chats with Seniors for Climate. 4-6pm at the Yellowknife Visitor Centre. A conversation about social and climate justice.
Saturday, April 25
Ecology North Coffeehouse. 9am-2pm at Mildred Hall School. Silent auction, raffle, coffee and a bake sale, with live performances from 10am to 12pm and a free barbecue courtesy of Lakeshore Co-op starting at noon.
Clothing and book swap with A-List Organizing & Design. 9am-2pm at Mildred Hall School. Drop off clothing at the school ahead of time on Friday, April 24 from 5-7pm, then show up to shop for free on Saturday.
Something Smells Fishy with Ever Good Medicine. 10:30am-12pm at Mildred Hall School. Traditional fish leather stories and medicines, plus sewing with fish leather.
Electric transportation showcase. 12-2pm at Mildred Hall School with YK Car Share Co-op, Arctic Energy Alliance and Shift. Learn from electric vehicle and bike owners.
Sunday, April 26
Cabane à sucre / Sugar Shack. 10am-12pm at Somba K’e Plaza. Association franco-culturelle de Yellowknife hosts a free taste of maple on a stick.
Talk Treaty to Me, with NorthWords. 1-2:30pm at Yellowknife Books. Crystal Gail Fraser and Sara Komarnisky discuss treaties, land and Indigenous sovereignty in Canada.
