A Yellowknife small business has introduced a produce fridge – similar to the concept of a farm stand – at its 110 Niven Drive premises.

Jocelyn Apps, the owner of Yellowknife Urban Farm, says the fridge is a way to provide access to fresh produce for everyone, regardless of their schedule, as it will be open all hours.

Using the honour system, customers can pay via cash (there is a cash box in the freezer) or via E-transfer to [email protected].

The fridge is stocked with fresh, seasonal produce grown by Yellowknife Urban Farm and other local producers. At the time of writing, Apps said the fridge was stocked with parsley, kohlrabi, kale, Swiss chard, lettuce, mint, chicken and quail eggs.

“It’s amazing how much you can grow in a very small space and on a small scale, and I just wanted it to be accessible for more people,” Apps told Cabin Radio.

She described the fridge as a “great opportunity” for the community to support local food production, and hopes it can help reduce both the amount of travel produce goes through before it reaches the consumer, and the need for packaging.

The fridge was first opened to the public around three weeks ago.
