NWT Premier RJ Simpson describes Nunavut’s outgoing premier as having a “calm and steady presence,” a deep love for the territory and its people and a “remarkable ability to connect with others.”

Premier PJ Akeeagok, who is also the MLA for Iqaluit-Niaqunnguu, announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday that he would not be running for re-election in Nunavut’s upcoming election in order to spend more time with his family.

“Serving the people of this territory has been the honour of a lifetime,” he wrote.

“I’ve been humbled every day by the trust Nunavummiut have placed in me, and I’m deeply proud of what we’ve achieved together.”

Akeeagok, who is originally from Grise Fiord, was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in 2021.

In a Wednesday statement reflecting on Akeeagok’s announcement, NWT Premier Simpson thanked the Nunavut premier for his leadership, friendship and “unwavering commitment” to the people of the North.

“Over the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Premier Akeeagok as both a colleague and a friend,” Simpson stated.

“People are drawn to PJ because he is kind, thoughtful and genuinely authentic – and that has made him not only a strong leader, but a deeply respected one.”

Simpson added Akeeagok “has been a powerful voice for Inuit self-determination, for housing, for families and for a stronger, more resilient north.”

He pointed to achievements during Akeeagok’s tenure as premier such as the signing of Nunavut’s devolution agreement and launch of Nunavut 3000, a plan to build 3000 new housing units throughout the territory by 2030.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Premier Akeeagok in the months ahead, and I wish him and his family all the best as they prepare for the next chapter,” Simpson concluded, thanking Akeeagok for his service and partnership.

Nunavut’s general election will be held on or before October 27.
