Police will talk to students about gun safety later this week after recent incidents in Fort McPherson and Inuvik that RCMP are linking to the drug trade.

A 36-year-old has been charged after a photo circulated online of a man in Inuvik with a handgun, RCMP said on Tuesday.

A separate investigation has begun after what police termed a sawed-off rifle was found in an abandoned car in the town.

Following those incidents and others “involving youth in Fort McPherson,” RCMP say they will address students at Inuvik’s East Three Secondary School on Friday.

A firearms safety presentation will be delivered in partnership with the local justice committee and the NWT’s chief firearms officer, RCMP said.

According to police, tips from the public triggered investigations into the two recent Inuvik offences.

“We extend our gratitude to those members of the public who support police by reporting suspicious activity and encourage all community members to remain vigilant,” a news release stated.
