Yellowknife city councillors finalize new deal for bylaw officers

Yellownife’s city council has voted unanimously to authorize a new collective agreement for municipal enforcement officers.

The city’s municipal enforcement division is its own bargaining unit, separate to other staff at City Hall.

Negotiations between the union and city briefly reached the point of strike action being scheduled before a last-minute deal was agreed.

This week, council rubberstamped the new agreement by moving the relevant bylaw through its second and third readings.

According to documents published online, the deal runs until the end of December 2027 and features:

  • annual salary increases worth five percent backdated to the start of 2024, four percent backdated to January 2025, four percent in January 2026 and 3.5 percent in January 2027
  • increased hourly premiums for work in the evenings and overnight;
  • addition of Indigenous cultural leave; and
  • improve casual and parental leave.
