RCMP in Hay River say they have charged an Alberta 23-year-old after finding drugs, cash and a gun while enforcing an eviction order in the town.
According to RCMP, police supporting the sheriff’s office during an eviction on Monday found a person “in possession of illicit cannabis and a weapon.”
“Officers then located approximately 49 grams of suspected crack cocaine, pre-packaged for sale, a prohibited pistol with the serial number removed, and over $12,000 in cash,” RCMP stated in a Wednesday news release.
Police said 23-year-old Rukundo Fota of Edmonton faces a dozen charges. Most are related to illegal and unsafe firearms use, alongside charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.
He is also charged with failing to comply with bail conditions. According to police, Fota was already out on bail at the time of his arrest, the conditions of which required him to reside in Alberta. He has now been remanded into custody, police added.
Fota was the subject of an RCMP news release in 2024 after police alleged more than $17,000 and four stolen guns were found in a Hay River trailer. Charges against him in that matter were later stayed.
