St Pat’s hockey captain Blake Rose scored a dramatic overtime goal to win the Wade Hamer Challenge Cup 7-6 on Wednesday, while Sir John’s girls were helped to the title by a Sadeè Walden hat-trick.
“I’m feeling great. I’m vibing to the music. I feel amazing,” said Walden after the game, which Sir John won 6-2.
The two Yellowknife high schools – École St Patrick and École Sir John Franklin – compete annually for male and female hockey titles at the city’s multiplex.
“We’ve been preparing since the start of the year. [It’s] a lot of hard work, waking up at 6am and doing workouts. I think it’s all been worth it, though,” Walden told Cabin Radio.
Rose, who scored the winning goal in the boys’ game with 6:50 left in overtime, said he was “feeling pretty crazy” after a close contest.

“I felt confident, to be honest. We had resilience. I’m proud of the boys for that,” he said.
In addition to Rose’s overtime goal, Nolan Dusome and Gavin Rose both scored twice for St Pat’s, while Marcus Vandermeer and Deacon Lantz each contributed one.
For Sir John boys, John Chorostkowski and Finley Stewart each scored twice alongside goals from Cormac Stewart and Will Avery.
Sir John girls Anna Aikman, Ria Rogers and Kaylee Fowler all scored goals in addition to Walden’s three. Alyssa Maurice and Addie Long scored for St Pat’s.
