RCMP in Hay River say they have arrested and charged an armed 30-year-old man following what they described as “a volatile situation” in the community over the weekend.
According to a Tuesday press release, police received a report shortly before 9:30pm on Sunday that an intoxicated man, who was on bail conditions to remain inside a Hay River residence, had left the home.
Officers said they later learned the man had armed himself with a shotgun before leaving the home.
RCMP then received a report that the man had returned to the residence and was “acting erratically” while still in possession of the loaded gun.
“A brief standoff” occurred at the home, police said, alleging the man then dropped the firearm before charging at officers. RCMP said they used a conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a Taser, and arrested the man.
According to police, no one was injured in the incident. RCMP said a second long-gun was located in the home and seized.
Police have charged Sean Mabbitt with:
- failing to comply with release order conditions;
- resisting a peace officer;
- assaulting a peace officer;
- unauthorized possession of a firearm;
- possessing a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized;
- possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
- careless use of a firearm;
- unsafe storage of firearms;
- possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number; and
- mischief under $5,000.
Mabbitt appeared before a justice of the peace on the charges and was remanded into custody, police said.
