Expect an increased presence of security and emergency personnel at Yellowknife’s airport on Tuesday.

The NWT Department of Infrastructure said a live security exercise has been planned to “test the effectiveness of the airport’s emergency plan in response to an act of unlawful interference with civil aviation.”

The department said this means simulated emergency scenarios will be conducted at the airport, which could include loud noises and “visible response activities.” It added that access to certain areas of the airport will be temporarily restricted.

The department said there is no threat to public safety and scheduled flights will not be impacted by the security exercise.

It advised people at the airport to follow instructions from airport staff and security and to not call emergency services except in the case of a real emergency.

“Your cooperation is essential to the success of this important training,” the department stated.

The department said under Canadian aviation security regulations, airport operators are required to conduct a live security exercise at least once every two years.
