This summer will involve the planting of 1.5 million trees along a stretch of Highway 3 and near Behchokǫ̀ and Wekweètì, the Tłı̨chǫ Government says.

The program is the latest segment of a multi-year project launched in 2025 that promised to plant 12 million trees over seven years. The Tłı̨chǫ Government now says its target is 13 million over six years.

A ceremony to begin this summer’s planting will be held at the Behchokǫ̀ Culture Centre from 10am on Friday.

“This will mark the continuation of the largest reforestation effort ever undertaken in the Northwest Territories,” the Tłı̨chǫ Government stated in a news release.

The Tłı̨chǫ Government calls the project “an effort to push back against the effects of climate change” designed to regenerate the land and restore caribou habitat.

Last year, the program had a target of planting about 1.7 million trees. This year’s 1.5 million trees will be planted along Highway 3 within Tłı̨chǫ land, around Behchokǫ̀ and on the south shore of Snare Lake, across from Wekweètì.

The project is funded through a partnership involving Tree Canada, the Tłı̨chǫ Government and the federal Two Billion Trees program.

That federal program was cancelled in the last budget. The precise impact of that cancellation on tree planting in the NWT isn’t yet clear.
