Some water fixtures at Hay River’s Harry Camsell School have recorded elevated lead levels in tests.

Hay River schools are the latest to be tested in a territory-wide campaign sparked by the discovery, earlier in 2025, of high lead levels in the water of some Yellowknife schools.

So far, the majority of NWT schools tested have had at least some fixtures produce water containing lead above Health Canada guideline levels.

“Fortunately, none of the water fixtures that exhibited high lead concentrations are used for human consumption,” the school said in a letter to parents.

“Out of an abundance of caution, drinking water fixtures at Harry Camsell School will continue to be out of service and an alternate drinking water source will continue to be provided.”

Results are also expected soon from the town’s Princess Alexandra, École Boréale and Diamond Jenness schools, all of which were tested last week alongside Harry Camsell.

Kátł’odeeche First Nation’s Chief Sunrise School and Fort Resolution’s Deninu School are also awaiting results.
