A police operation took place at Yellowknife’s downtown B7 convenience store for most of Wednesday.

An RCMP SUV was parked outside the store with its lights flashing for most of the morning and was joined in the afternoon by an unmarked cruiser.

A reporter was turned away by officers upon entering the store in the afternoon. The precise nature of the RCMP operation was not confirmed.

Signage on the doors indicates B7 will be “closed until further notice.”

The 24-hour convenience store was opened almost two years ago by Mamush Feyisa, who said at the time he felt Yellowknife was missing a place to purchase food in the middle of the night.

On Thursday morning, RCMP confirmed they were engaged in an investigation and reassured there was no threat to public safety. Since the matter is ongoing, they said, they could not provide any more details.

B7 was also approached for comment on Wednesday.
