Firefighters were called to a home in Norman Wells early on Saturday morning.
Images from the scene, on Lynx Avenue, showed a building well alight and a plume of smoke rising into the night sky. Temperatures in Norman Wells dropped from -30C to -40C overnight.
There were no immediate reports of injuries but few details could be confirmed. The town’s fire division has been approached for more information.
At 5:30am, the NWT Power Corporation said it had cut power at firefighters’ request while they worked to contain the fire.
The Town of Norman Wells opened a warming centre for people affected by the outage, given the extreme cold, though NTPC said most homes had power back by 6:30am.
“Onsite staff are working on restoration to a handful of customers in close proximity to the emergency event which should take place shortly,” the power corporation said at noon on Saturday.
