The NWT government has added two Fort Smith schools to its list of facilities under health orders because of elevated lead levels in drinking water.

PW Kaeser High School and Joseph Burr Tyrrell School each had some water fixtures and fountains with levels above Health Canada guideline safe limits, the GNWT stated on Wednesday.

Schools across the territory are being tested after the issue first emerged in Yellowknife schools last year.

The GNWT said it will now “identify and implement remediation measures for the affected water fixtures,” adding more detailed information about those measures will follow.

“Once all corrective measures are completed, follow-up testing will be carried out and reported to the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer for health risk assessment,” the territory stated.

“Use of affected fixtures will only resume once new safety systems are in place, testing confirms the water meets all health standards, and approval is provided by the OCPHO.”
