A convoy of Canadian Armed Forces equipment and personnel will reach the NWT on Monday as it moves from Edmonton to Yellowknife for an exercise.

The convoy is part of Operation Nanook-Nunalivut, a training operation conducted in different northern locations each year.

Departing Edmonton on Sunday, the convoy is expected to cross into the NWT on Monday and arrive in Fort Providence that day before continuing north to Yellowknife.

Some pieces of equipment rarely seen in the North are expected to form part of the convoy, including an M777 howitzer artillery unit.

Operation Nanook-Nunalivut “demonstrates the Canadian Armed Forces ability to project and sustain forces in the High Arctic under the harshest conditions, while assessing new capabilities and interoperability with Allies,” a Department of National Defence news release stated.

“Members of the public may see military personnel in operational clothing during short, scheduled rest stops along the route. Participating soldiers will not carry weapons or ammunition when making public stops along designated travel routes.

“Motorists are asked to use caution when travelling near these vehicles and to pass safely. The convoys are not expected to disrupt traffic, as they will move in small groups with spacing between vehicles to support safe travel.”
