After residents complained about weeks of missing mail from nearby mailboxes, Canada Post acknowledged the “high volume of snow” in Yellowknife has disrupted deliveries.

Multiple residents of the city’s Northlands neighbourhood contacted Cabin Radio last week to report an absence of letters and packages from mailboxes at the corner of Anson Drive and Norseman Drive.

In an emailed statement this week, Canada Post said it believed the issue had now been resolved.

Canada Post did not specify the duration of the disruption, though two residents each estimated more than two weeks may have passed without mail.

Yellowknife has had one of its snowiest winters in recent memory.

Just over 28 cm of snow fell on the city in February according to Environment Canada data, almost double the average for the month.

Between November and February, snowfall was high: 117.1 cm fell across the four months, well above both the all-time average of 88.3 cm and the modern average (from 2000 onward) of 99.2 cm.

“Inclement weather and snow have recently affected our operations in Yellowknife, with a high volume of snow that has fallen this winter,” Canada Post stated.

“Our Delivery Services team continues to work to clear community mailbox sites across the city.”

Canada Post said its “typical standard is for community mailbox sites to be cleared within 24 hours.”

“Unfortunately, in this case, due to the recent snow build up and as the roads and sidewalks to the community mailboxes were not clear of snow, our contractors have been unable to reach the community mailbox sites to conduct snow clearance,” its statement continued, thanking residents for their patience.

If you have issues with mail delivery, there is a webpage you can use with an option to report an issue related to snow clearance (or you can select from other concerns).
