The Inuvialuit Regional Corporation says it has paused the intake for its home repair program due to a lack of resources available to tackle a backlog of requests.
“Demand for support continues to exceed our current resources, and the shortage of skilled labour has made it difficult to address the diverse needs of our communities in a timely manner,” the IRC stated in a Tuesday press release.
Funding constraints also contributed to the decision to put intake for the program on pause, the IRC said.
Launched in 2021, the program offers home repairs for beneficiary Elders aged 50 and older living in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.
The future of the program is dependent on securing funding from the federal government, the release stated.
“We continue to advocate for increased support so that we may resume intake, expand eligibility and better meet the needs of all Inuvialuit beneficiaries,” the IRC said.
“Our team remains committed to responding promptly to emergency situations regarding hot water heater or furnace failures – as these are vital to community wellbeing and safety.”
Across the territory, the need for major repairs remains one of the most persistent housing issues.
In 2024, housing inadequacy affected 18 percent of households according to a territorial government needs assessment report published earlier this month.
