Yellowknife Catholic Schools says its facilities will remain on bottled water after NWT government lead tests confirmed some concerns.

Results reported this week show high levels of lead – and copper – in parts of the drinking-water systems at Weledeh Catholic School and École St Patrick High School.

YCS had already decided late last year to switch to bottled water at its schools while it awaited those results. The GNWT had offered to cover “reasonable costs” of such a switch.

While work to fix the plumbing takes place, YCS “will remain exclusively on bottled water,” superintendent Adam Murray stated in a letter this week.

Separately, Colville Lake’s school was given the all-clear.

In a notice on Friday, the GNWT said tests at the Sahtu community’s school – including its modulars and gym – did not identify lead concerns in the water.

“No remediation or mitigation measures are required, and Colville Lake School can use sinks and water fountains normally,” the territory stated.
