The Tłı̨chǫ Government is launching a new series of 15 scholarships valued at $2,000 each for people pursuing a Red Seal trades certification or a post-secondary degree or diploma.
To apply for the Giant Mind scholarships, you need to be a Tłı̨chǫ citizen living in the NWT who has been accepted into a Red Seal training program or post-secondary education.
Applications opened on Tuesday. You have until 4pm on July 17, 2026 to submit your application.
A selection committee from the Mine Training Society and Tłı̨chǫ Government will choose the recipients.
“We are building capacity in our Nation’s workforce and this is an investment in our citizens towards steps that lead to Tłı̨chǫ self-sufficiency,” Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty was quoted as saying in a news release.
Here are the steps you need to take to apply:
1. Make sure you’re eligible
Check the full criteria here. It’s open to Tłı̨chǫ residents of the NWT who are in a trades training program or a post-secondary program lasting at least 90 days.
2. Write a short essay
The essay needs to be about 250 words long and describe what winning the scholarship means to you, alongside how investing in your education will benefit Tłı̨chǫ communities and the NWT.
3. Get your documents together
You also need to send:
- a copy of your program’s letter of acceptance;
- two reference letters;
- transcripts from your most recently completed semesters; and
- a signed media consent form (available from the organizers).
4. Submit your application
Applications can be dropped off at the Mine Training Society – 5110 49 Street,
Yellowknife – or submitted by email.
