The NWT government says it is adding a fifth level to its wildfire danger warning system.
During wildfire season, NWT Fire shares information on fire danger forecasts for communities on its website to help people make decisions about using fire on the land.
Fire danger is a measure of how likely it is for wildfires to start, grow, spread or challenge firefighters.
The wildfire agency would previously rate fire danger in NWT communities as either low, moderate, high or extreme.
In a press release on Wednesday morning, the Department of Environment and Climate Change said it has added a fifth “very high” designation between “high” and “extreme.”
The department said the change will align the NWT with other Canadian jurisdictions, provide clearer guidance and ensure the “extreme” danger level is reserved for “the most severe conditions.”
