Flooding closed the Hay River heritage centre in 2022. Now, after receiving more than half a million dollars in federal funding, the heritage centre is ready to open on Wednesday, June 10.
The Hay River Museum Society, which runs the heritage centre, said in a Tuesday Facebook post the centre will be open Wednesdays 11am-5pm, Thursdays 11am-9pm, and Fridays to Sundays 11am-5pm. It is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and statutory holidays.
The museum has been working to secure funds for repairs and relocation since flood damage in 2022 left the building unsafe to use, with most of its exhibits placed in storage.
Last year, the society said it was aiming to complete the repairs by August 2026, so Tuesday’s announcement means the building is opening two months earlier than anticipated.
The museum society is also developing a five-year capital plan and a tourism business plan, which it said in a separate Facebook post “will set the direction for some of the great ongoing and future initiatives of the Hay River Museum Society.”
