Norman Wells residents are invited to an open house as a new environmental assessment is spun up for Imperial Oil’s impending closure.

Imperial has said operations at its Norman Wells oil field – a century old and the town’s economic heartbeat – “will end in the third quarter of 2026 as the facility comes to the end of its lifespan.”

The facility was already facing multiple environmental assessments related to different aspects of its operations. Now its closure has been announced, the focus has shifted to one assessment covering how that will happen.

The Mackenzie Valley Review board says the open house, at the Norman Wells Royal Canadian Legion from 2-7pm on Tuesday, April 14, will discuss the process that governs the new environmental assessment.
