Do you know what happened to the Snowking Cup?

Missing: Small, green trophy. Resembles recycled glassware. May smell of beer. Last seen in the vicinity of Yellowknife Bay. Answers to the name “Snowking Cup.”

As public appeals go, this one is unusual. To Mike Mitchell, it’s important. He has no idea where the Snowking Cup is and he’ll welcome any leads.

Mitchell has systematically interviewed past and present organizers of the annual pond hockey tournament to establish why the trophy – originally crafted at Old Town Glassworks – hasn’t been seen for years.

Take Craig Scott, for example.

Under questioning, Scott admitted “he would never award the cup for fear that it would go missing or get broken,” Mitchell told Cabin Radio this week.

“So I guess that was some wise advice.”

This year’s organizer, Rylund Johnson, had no idea of the cup’s whereabouts, Mitchell said. No trophy was awarded at the end of the 2026 tournament.

Mitchell moved on to Tom McLennan, who also organized the event for a couple of years.

“He suggested the cup might have been broken and that an ice version was produced,” Mitchell said.

“But this is all rumour and innuendo, so that’s why I contacted you. I thought we should get the word out and figure out once and for all what’s happened to the cup.”

This article will be old news in seconds flat if someone wakes up on Wednesday morning and reads this while drinking their morning coffee out of a green recycled glassware product with “Snowking Cup” engraved on the front.

If that’s you, or there’s a trophy on your neighbour’s shelf that looks conspicuously similar to the one pictured below, you need to get in touch. (You can do so anonymously or you can simply contact Mitchell direct on 867-444-1031.)

If you know for certain the trophy has been destroyed, we’d appreciate even that much information.

“If it is in fact missing and gone for good, we can have a new one commissioned,” said Mitchell.

So far, he said, he appears to be the only person animated by this mystery.

There are two reasons for his interest. First, he’s a longtime Snowkings’ Winter Festival volunteer and, while the cup is run at arm’s length from the main festival, he’s a self-described “Snowking Cup journeyman” with a keen interest in the tournament being the best it can be.

Second, his kid was on the winning team this year and had no trophy to lift.

“I was really hoping that someone in our family could finally hoist the cup,” Mitchell confessed.

Still, if the cup is found, don’t expect anyone to engrave the winning team’s name into it Stanley Cup-style any time soon.

The winners’ name this year? How Bats Pee.

“There is a history of questionable names,” said Mitchell. “Some are pretty witty. I’m not sure about that one.”
