The GNWT is relaunching its emergency preparedness campaign ahead of flood and fire season, with a focus on helping people make emergency kits and plans.

Authorities in the territory have repeatedly emphasized that no matter how good (or otherwise) the territorial or community-level response is, individuals and households need to carefully prepare for a crisis, too.

Flooding and wildfires have triggered hundreds of millions of dollars in losses across the territory in the past five years.

Be Ready, a GNWT campaign since 2022, “has officially relaunched with a focus on awareness, knowledge, and confidence in emergency preparedness for individuals and households year-round,” the territory stated on Tuesday.

This year’s campaign will have “an added focus on sustained, practical preparedness information,” a news release stated, “to help residents better understand their role in emergencies and take simple steps to prepare.”

The campaign will encourage NWT residents to build emergency kits, make household emergency plans and “know how to stay informed during an emergency.”

In a statement, communities minister Vince McKay said: “Residents have told us they feel unprepared for the increasing emergencies the NWT is facing.

“It is my hope that through the improved Be Ready! Campaign, residents will know where to access information before and during an emergency, how to prepare for common hazards in their community, and be ready for major emergencies like wildfires, floods and evacuations.”
