Sambaa K’e’s school has received the all-clear after testing for lead in its water, but eight fixtures at Délı̨nę’s Ɂehtseo Ayha School failed the same tests.

The two schools’ results were the latest announced by the NWT government on Wednesday evening.

All of the territory’s schools are being tested after initial samples in Yellowknife last year indicated lead was leaching into the water from the plumbing of ageing facilities.

At Ɂehtseo Ayha School, one science room fixture had lead levels in the water that were 177 times the Health Canada guideline maximum before flushing – and still 25 times the limit after flushing.

“Effective immediately, some affected water fixtures at Ɂehtseo Ayha School will be out of service, and an alternative drinking water source will be provided, where it is not already in place,” the GNWT stated on Wednesday.

“The school will also be required to flush some affected fixtures for three minutes each morning before use. Those sinks will remain in service with the flushing protocol in place until mitigation measures are completed.”
