Police in Yellowknife will raise money for Home Base Yellowknife and create a new post-secondary bursary as they bring back the Cst Chris Worden Memorial Charity Golf Tournament.

The tournament was held for the first time in 1998 and renamed for the late Cst Worden after he was killed while on duty in Hay River in 2007.

However, it hasn’t taken place since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sgt Greg Morrow, an RCMP officer in the NWT for the past 15 years, said he and others had formed a committee to “get this event back up and running.”

The committee has chosen youth charity Home Base Yellowknife to be this year’s recipient of proceeds from the May 29 tournament at Yellowknife Golf Club.

A portion of the proceeds will also go toward a new bursary that Morrow said will help “young adults looking to move on to post-secondary careers in law enforcement.”

He said the bursary is being launched in conjunction with the Yellowknife Community Foundation.

“It’s a one-day event and a way for everybody to get together and have some fun on the golf course, regardless of where your skills lie,” Morrow said.

“At the end we have a get-together, dinner and a silent auction so everyone can get to know each other a little better and raise some money.”

A team costs $500 for four players, including golf and dinner. For more information about registering or donating, contact the organizers by email.
