A new 90-room hotel on Yellowknife’s Old Airport Road has been greenlit by city planners.
Plans for a four-storey building, currently dubbed Stanton Express and to be situated next to the city’s existing Canadian Tire, were filed earlier this year.
The municipality listed the applicant as Stanton Suites Ltd, the operator of an existing hotel on a separate stretch of the same road, nearer to Stanton Territorial Hospital.
That application was formally approved last week. There’s a two-week appeal period until May 22 and the developer must meet a series of conditions.
Meanwhile, a second hotel proposal now has new documentation available.

Nunastar, owner of the Explorer Hotel, is planning an “Explorer 2.0” adjacent to the existing hotel that would have 150 rooms.
That application now comes with a study of “pedestrian wind comfort” and snow drifting alongside a separate traffic study.
The traffic study recommends that the four-way stop outside the current Explorer Hotel be upgraded to a set of traffic lights by the time a second hotel opens in the vicinity.
