The NWT’s wildfire agency says fire danger may increase this weekend in the Dehcho and east of Hay River. Strong winds are expected in some areas.

In a Thursday afternoon update, NWT Fire said it was “expecting increasing fire danger in the South Slave and Dehcho, particularly toward Fort Simpson and Fort Liard.”

“In addition, there may be fire risk east of Hay River,” the agency stated.

“It’s important to be aware of fire danger, especially if you’re planning on travelling over the long weekend.”

Wind gusts of about 40 km/h are forecast in some areas.

So far, only one wildfire has been reported this season – a holdover fire on the perimeter of last year’s Fort Providence fire. NWT Fire says it isn’t posing any threat.
