The federal government is investing more than $13 million to improve high-speed internet access to “up to 898 homes” in Colville Lake, Gamètì, Paulatuk, Sachs Harbour, Sambaa K’e and Wekweètì.
The initiative will be facilitated through Northwestel’s partnership with Telesat.
The Canadian company has a program called Telesat Lightspeed – a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites similar to how Starlink delivers internet – to increase connectivity and eliminate “digital deserts” according to its website.
The federal government said as of May 2026, 85.7 percent of households in the NWT have access to high-speed internet, but said that would increase to 94.5 percent at the end of the year.
The project is expected to be completed by March 2028.
